About Cacao

The use of raw cacao for ceremonies among many Mesoamerican indigenous tribes is well documented. Traditionally cacao symbolize cycle of life, healing and the recall of the power of ancestors. In the modern world, cacao is still used in holistic medicine for getting clarity, setting intentions and doing healing work. The phenomena of this concept which is also researched by science, shows us that cacao activates a part of our brain and interacts with several neurotransmitters including dopamine, serotonin and endorphins which then are released into the brain.

These neurotransmitters play an important role psychologically. Dopamine is important for the expression of feelings of happiness. Some of the many roles of serotonin include impulse control and mood elevation. Phenylethylamine is an endorphin chemical that has an impact on several “feel-good hormones” and it is also described as “an immediate shot of happiness, pleasure and emotional well-being”. These suggest why cacao is considered a plant medicine for “opening the heart”.

Cacao is a powerful medicine that taught us to appreciate the present moment and helps us to understand that true contentment occurs when we value the simple things of life.
